The objective of the health economics working group is the analysis of the relationship between health service utilization, an individual's health status and her socio-economic characteristics (e. g. employment situation). We compile unique data from three Austrian provinces (Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria) covering (i) individual health insurance records and information on health care utilization, (ii) detailed non-self reported medical information on the health status from screening programs, and (iii) provider characteristics at the level of physicians. These data are matched with the NRN datasets (i.e., taxpayer records and social security records including work-related information at the individual level). The resulting data base enables us to observe individuals and their relatives, their employers, and the health care providers over a time period of up to 20 years. Our research contributes to three research areas: First, we investigate the interdependencies between individuals’ socioeconomic characteristics, their labor market situation, the environmental quality at the local level, the utilization of health services and the health status (Topic “Health Care Utilization and Health Status”). Second, we analyze (i) the determinants of the participation to preventive medical examinations, and (ii) their long-term consequences on individual health and on the cost of the health care system (Topic “Economics of Prevention”). Third, we focus on the economic behavior of general practitioners, serving as gatekeepers for specialized care. Specifically, we analyze the health provision of resident doctors (e.g. prescribing and referral behavior of general practitioners) depending on their individual characteristics and the physicians’ market structure (Topic “Primary Health Care Markets”).
